The village is reported from 1285 in monasterial documents with his current
name. At the A. Mihelis his name emanated from the verb crawls, because his
residents were transported as reptiles by place in place, until they find
sure place in order to they are installed.
Very probably however this opinion is erroneous and was drifted so much the
A. Mjhelis, what other researchers (Lymperis, Komninos - Kabsidelis) by the
name Erpani with that is entered in English naval maps. Perhaps the interpretation
name place should be sought in the word drys (oak) which at the Al. Tzeno emanates
from the indo-europian root dereu.
The region is full of oaks and sure it assembled the attention of residents
of island from the ancient years, after the acorns were used for the treatment
of skins (tannage), until the medieval years. In 1548 the Belon reports that
became exploitation of oaks Repanidio, while in 1611 it is reported that pirates
were ravaged a caique with 13 seamen, that carried acorns from Limnos in the
Samothrace. |
