The settlement of Moydros wasrefered the JD' of century. According to Ioannis
E' Palaiologos's gold stamp, it was granted in 1355 in the M. Vatopedio. The JE' of century is reported the existence of also castle of Moydros (1464),
as one from the three more importantly island. The castle report also the later
sightseers Bordone (1528), Porcacchi (1577 with t name Mandro), Randolph (1680),
e.t.c. this castle found itself in the limelight of Limnia 's history for enough
centuries.
In 1275 Ioannis Foskaris and the Fjlokalos Gradenigos was managed it. In 1464
were occupied by their Enetians for five years. In 1470 the beseiged Limnians
and Enetians were stopped the attacks of Mahmoyt Ali(Turks). In 1656 the Venetians
occupied it, with all the island, for few months and him destroyed, leaving
Limnos without fortresses. In 1700 the Moydros is reported as important export
harbour of Limnos. In 1770 the Orlofs selected the gulf and the region of Moydros
in order to stay for a while. This choice, as it is known, had tragic consequences
for all the island. In 1785 the Choiseaul-Gouffier found in the Moydros roughly
60 houses. That season, in order that it reports Mr Sacas, 55 pirate ships made
raids in the Northern Aegean. Between the other it was stolen to the island
Limnos the Moytros and the nearest parts of this". The Moydros became known
in all Greece in 1912, when the Koyntoyriotis selected it as naval station of
Greek Fleet and was heard in all Europe in 1918, when was signed the treaty
of Moydros, among Turkey and in the Allies.
The name Moydros at a version (A. Miheli's) emanated from the word monydrion(monastery).
However as we saw above, when was founded the metohj of M. Vatopedio (1355),
already existed the village with its name. More likely is a second version,
that says that near in his harbour existed a mydros, that is granite rock from
lava, where the seamen tied up their boats . A lot of sightseers him name Mandro,
while in older texts and documents, the JI' and Jc' of century is marked with
the form "the Moydros". Many limnians use still in the oral reason
this name.
The monastery of Moydroy, at the A. Mjheli', was found there that was built
in 1903 the Eyaggelistria. However this monastery is not reported from 1355
as metohi of M. Vatopedio, but newest, Ag. Marina, metohj of M. Koytloymoysio.
This second monastery had tragic end on Ottoman domination, when the Turks him
burned with seven monks, because they found in a well dead somebodies turks
officers.
They were saved only two monks that resorted to the Ag. ' Term and they denounced
in the abbot of M. Koytloymoysio that the neighbours metohio had killed the
turks, with a view to accuse the monks, is dissolved the abbey and they acquire
her properties. Then the abbot submitted the village in epitimion (curse), which
untied hardly in 2001 in special ceremony which in deed took also big publicity.
Very old is also the church of Brigadiers, that has one marvellous wooden icon
screen. It is calculated that it is the JD' of century. |
