Kontias

The name of the village emanated from Byzantine landowner of the region Konteas, that the delivery him wants Peloponnesian in the origin. The same delivery reports that also the adjacent torrent Hantrias owes his name in a other Byzantine landowner Handreas, also Peloponnesian. Name place was reported in 1329 as "Palaiokastello of Konteas".
From the name it appears that it existed from older.
The village, at the N. Lymperis, was initially found near in the sea and it was abandoned because the pirates around in 1600. In the old region remains only a devastated castle, which is identified with the reported from 1346 castle of Exadaktylos.
In his new place the village was built round the hill of Saint Athanassios, above in which existed monastery where you belong in the M. Layra before the capture of City of Konstantinopolis, at least from 1346. Apart from monastery the Ag. Athanassios, in the M. Layra you belong also country church , "the called Despotic ofcountry Kontia'". This is confirmed by documents 1565 (metropolitan Mitrofanis), 1615 (Timotheos V') and 1631, published from the V. Atesi and Mr Saca. The castle of Kontia was considered from more considerably Limnos in all the duration the Middle Ages and Ottoman domination. This is pointed out by a lot of sightseers.
Near in the Kontia existed also other monasterial fortunes, on Zymata or Zeygmata (1323, M. Pantokratoros), the Loyli and in Kakkavo (1355, M. Lay'ra) as well as "the Voynos Press" (the hill Press) becide in the village.
