The name of village is owed in the place that is built, in the depth gully
(hole). He is so much well hidden what the visitor come into view only that
when reaches in verge of hypertext of elevation.
Very probably it is the Byzantine Katapotamos that is reported in 1284 and in
1355 in documents of M. Layras. The village was initially found in the north
beach (one of the more beautiful beaches, that it deserves it is visited )of
the island in the place that named Gomati or Rubber.
The Gomati took his name from the Byzantine general Gormato, which had property
in the region and he was donated in M. Layra. In 1284 existed castle in the
region called "Palaiokastro of Sfoyggara'". The name Palaiokastro
betray that the castle existed from older. Today are saved only certain ruins.
In 1565 were published patriarch document, where they are reported as properties
of M. layra. The property of abbey is also confirmed with documents 1615 and
1631, where it is supplemented that belonged in the abbey before 1453.
Near in the gomati and to the interior of region, the visitor will meet one very
big area(thick sand=ammoydes), that exists thin sand, that reminds deserted
but also betray the existence of sea in older seasons a landscape really impressive. |
